FDA warns against using Licorice Coughing Liquid

In a Jan. 16 alert, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning advising consumers not to purchase or use the product Licorice Coughing Liquid. Sold online and in some retail stores, the cough syrup contains unidentified morphine, according to the agency.

Licorice Cough Liquid Contains Unidentified Morphine

Licorice Coughing Liquid is manufactured by the Ma Ying Long Pharmaceutical Group in China and distributed in the United States by Master Herbs USA, Inc. in Pomona, Calif. The product's box is printed in English and Chinese, but does not identify the presence of morphine in English.

The FDA reports that ingesting morphine can result in severe allergic reactions in people who are hypersensitive to the drug, including abnormal heart rate, involuntary muscle movements, spasm of the larynx and vocal cord swelling. It can also cause respiratory depression and death.

Master Herbs USA has agreed to recall the product. This recall comes fast on the heels of the recall by Perrigo Company’s children’s cough syrup because problems with the oral dosage cups could lead to an overdose of medication.

The FDA urges consumers and healthcare professionals to report any adverse effects related to the cough syrup by contacting the agency’s MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting program, or by calling 1-800-332-1088.
