Which raises your blood pressure more, too much sugar or too much salt in foods?

If you're concerned about foods that raise your blood pressure, in the study, "Sugar-induced blood pressure elevations over the lifespan of three substrains of Wistar rats," published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, February1998, researchers found that high dietary sucrose (sugar) can chronically increase the systolic blood pressure (SBP) in three substrains of Wistar rats. Increased concentrations of circulating insulin were found in Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) and Munich Wistar rats (WAM) suggesting that the glucose/insulin system was involved, at least in these two substrains, in the maintenance of high systolic blood pressure (SBP) levels during chronic, heavy sugar ingestion.

Which raises your blood pressure more, too much sugar or too much salt in your daily diet? You have the issue of too much salt in commercial breads and other processed foods, and added sugars, syrups and sweeteners in other foods and beverages. There's also the issue of too many fats added to foods, and other ingredients that increase shelf life. What are these additives to cleaned food that comes directly from nature doing to your health?

Since the majority of studies concerned with sugar-induced blood pressure elevation have principally been short-term, the 1998 investigation, "Sugar-induced blood pressure elevations over the lifespan of three substrains of Wistar rats," followed the effects of heavy sucrose ingestion on systolic blood pressure (SBP) and related parameters over the lifespan of three substrains of Wistar rats.

In the study, according to its abstract, all substrains showed the highest systolic blood pressure when ingesting the two diets highest in sucrose. The highest sugar-induced systolic blood pressure (SBP) elevation, which remained over the lifespan of all substrains, was found in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) had an intermediate elevation. WAM showed the lowest responses, although the average elevation of 6-8 mm Hg was statistically significant.

The following parameters could not be correlated with long-term elevation of systolic blood pressure (SBP); body weight, catecholamine excretion, renal function, and plasma renin activity, the study's abstract explains. Only insulin concentrations correlated: insulin concentrations were consistently higher in the two groups of Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) and Munich Wistar rats (WAM) consuming the high sucrose diets.

Or you might wish to look at the abstract of an older study, "Effects of diets containing different proportions of macronutrients on longevity of normotensive Wistar rats." The question is whether rats and people have the same responses to excesses of certain foods or nutrients. Mice and humans share 97.5% of their working DNA, according to the article, "Just 2.5% of DNA turns mice into men - New Scientist."

5 Healthy Habits That Fight the Signs of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that primary affects the synovial joints. These are the joints that are considered flexible joints. It is a painful disease and can be a very debilitating condition if not treated properly and sometimes even when it is treated properly.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment

What are some of the things that I can do to the fight the signs of RA?

Because RA is an autoimmune disease, meaning that the body attacks itself, fighting RA symptoms can be very difficult. However, studies have been done to highlight healthy habits that can help ward off some of the symptoms associated with RA. These habits maintained over a long period of time will help them to become part of your lifestyle which is the ultimate goal when it comes to living with RA.

Listed below are 5 healthy habits you can do to fight the signs of RA:

Have a positive outlook on life and your disease- RA is not who you are, it is something that you have. Maintaining the proper philosophy and attitude related to the disease is important for the treatment of RA. If you don't believe that it can get better, your body tends to respond to that and will continue to feel the effects of the pain on a more regular basis than if you believed. Having a good attitude will also help you to further seek the proper treatment because you actually believe the symptoms can be relieved and will do what it takes to find out how.Maintain the proper diet- Notice that it doesn't say to maintain a healthy diet.

The proper diet for RA is somewhat different from what a person that is trying to eat healthy may be. The proper diet for RA would include a diet rich in fish, vegetables, and healthy oils, which is also what the Mediterranean diet emphasizes. What you eat is always important when it comes to managing most disease processes and it's no different here.

Get moving- Exercise is something that we were all put here to do and it's not just for the "health" of it. Well maybe it is. Exercising not only can take your mind off of the pain for a while but strength training and conditioning show positive effects in the person with RA. Exercising and training smart is beneficial to your health in many different ways so consult with a trainer and with your physician to find out which exercises can help optimize your dealing with RA.

Find a support group- Support groups not only function to help you when you're not feeling well and when you are, they also pose as a resource to help some of the ailments you may be experiencing. People with RA are actually living with the disease and can be a great help to assisting with different types of therapies that may not have been mentioned to you by a physician.

Don't smoke- Smoking is harmful for joints in many different ways and it actually can exacerbate the disease process which will lead to further pain and decrease the amount of time that it takes for RA to have an effect on your body. Because RA is an autoimmune disease, it requires the body to respond positively even when it wants to respond negatively so smoking takes away some of the body's ability to do so.

While all of these are helpful hints and habits, it is going to be important to maintain them over an extended period of time to see their results. Not all things work for all people but you have to start somewhere to find out what works best for you. Doing nothing about the disease will not make it disappear and may even make it worse, so it is important to seek treatment right away. Consulting with a specialist is always an important part of your health and should be done. However, doing all that you can do outside of the office plays just as an important role as well. Having a positive philosophy regarding the disease will not only help your attitude and further your actions but it can change your results and ultimately improve your lifestyle.

Eating for weight loss without exercise

Is it possible to lose weight and burn body fat without exercise just due to what you eat? The answer is yes. It may be difficult and complicated, but you can certainly lose weight and fat through dieting alone.

How to lose weight without exercise

Now, I'm not talking about crash diets and starving yourself, and I'm also not saying that exercise and weightlifting shouldn't be a part of your daily life. However, I'm emphasizing the potency of just how effective diet alone can be if you want to lose weight.

Essentially, there are a variety of foods you can eat daily that will make it almost impossible for your body to store as fat, and as a result the weight will come off more easily. Many of these foods speed up your metabolism and give your body the energy it needs to become more proficient at fat burning. For people who like to enjoy the flavor of foods they eat, they may question how realistic these foods may be, but with the proper recipes, you would be surprised at just how much you can enjoy healthy foods without all the added unnecessary fat, sugar, and ingredients that make the flavor taste good.

All you have to do is make the investment. If you are proactive and go to the grocery store each week and stock up on only fruits, vegetables, lean fish and chicken, very low fat substitutes like skim milk and skim dairy, along with only the healthiest grains and carbohydrates, you can create meals that taste good and also make you look and feel good, while also contributing to weight loss.

Consider this daily diet, for example:

Breakfast: 1/2 cup of oatmeal with blueberries and strawberries + green tea and/or coffee with a sugar substitute and fat free cream or skim milk or a 1 egg yolk, 3-4 egg white omelet with broccoli, spinach, onions, mushrooms, and tomatoes

Lunch: Chicken teriyaki stir fry with carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, onions, and spinach with 1/4 cup of fat fee teriyaki sauce over 1 cup of white or brown rice + green tea

Dinner: Fish or chicken sandwich or salad w/ wheat bread with Dijon mustard and spinach and tomato on top w/ 1 cup of all natural reduced fat chips (if sandwich)

Dessert: Fruit Salad with optional low fat ready whip (only 1 cup)

* Consume about a gallon of water each day throughout the day

It's not perfect, but it's not supposed to be. You need to enjoy your food at least a little. Anything questionable needs to be strategically designed, moderated, and measured into your diet, but as you can see, a daily diet regimen such as this is loaded with abundant amounts of nutritious fruits and vegetables with high amounts of antioxidants and vitamins and minerals, in addition to sufficient low fat protein sources.

With a diet as strict as this, it would be hard for your body to gain weight and store body fat- it is almost fat and saturated fat-free, and loaded with fiber and quality carbs. Even when you sneak in a little flavor with the dressing, mustard, or low fat ready whip, your body can use a little bit of fat, especially when the majority of the meal is comprised of natural fruits and vegetables- you just have to know where to place it.

Now, imagine you worked out and exercised regularly on a diet like this?

Alcohol use increases risk of, and worsens, osteoporosis

Drinking is a health risk for many reasons, such as what it does to the heart and many other organs. What several studies have revealed in the past decade and a half is how alcohol deteriorates bone and cartilage.

Is Drinking Alcohol Harming Your Bones

Check this Article: Penile Implant Surgery in India

Soft tissue, like spinal discs, are largely comprised of fluid. Alcohol dehydrates the body. As I personally experienced, the dehydrated discs lose elasticity. The spine is a series of joints cushioned by the discs, and when the discs get deteriorate, the lining of these joints gets worn and aggravated. It's not a pleasant feeling.

Bones deteriorate, too. Alcohol use, especially during adolescence and young adult years ups the risk of osteoporosis later in life. Two or three ounces of alcohol every day is all it takes for the small intestine to not absorb calcium adequately. Alcohol also messes with the kidneys, pancreas and liver and their regulation of calcium and vitamin D. Vitamin D, which in turn is important for calcium absorption. When alcohol lowers blood calcium, a parathyroid hormone is released by four rice-sized glands at the rear of the thyroid. The hormone leaches calcium from the bone.

Two other hormones important to bone health also are under seige from alcohol. For women, alcohol decreases estrogen. As estrogen drops, it leads to bone loss. In the menopausal years, this adds to the bone loss that's naturally occurring. The stress hormone cortisol – a key topic in the alcoholism relapse book Every Silver Lining Has a Cloud – is found at a higher baseline in those of us with the disease of alcoholism, and remains high even after quitting. High levels of cortisol decrease bone formation and increase bone breakdown.

Also, excess alcohol kills osteoblasts and osteoclasts, that's doctor-speak for cells that make bones. No osteo-cells, no new bone growth or remodeling.

Let's compound that with lousy balance when drinking. A drinker is more likely to fall, and the bones depleted by drinking are more apt to break. There's good news here though: Some studies have found that lost bone can be partially restored within 60 days of quitting. Another reason sobriety is better to have than to lack.

The Effects of Impotence On Your Lifestyle

Lifestyle Habits That Effect Impotence

Impotence is a man's inability to maintain or get an erection long enough to experience sexual intercourse. There are several common factors that play a role in a man's impotence problems, both of which are physical and emotional in nature. Impotence or erectile dysfunction can be as simple as a prescribed medication side effect, to an illness, or to stress. There are lifestyle habits that also cause impotence problems, such as obesity, unhealthy dietary habits, excessive smoking, drugs, and alcohol abuse. These habits are considered toxic to the sexual health of a man and effects his ability to enjoy a lasting sexual intimacy.

The Effects of Impotence On Your Lifestyle

Impotence and Various Environment Factors

Could there also be a connection regarding the effects of impotence where you live? Researchers and clinical studies have pointed out certain environmental factors that can cause impotence. Do you live in an area that introduces you to heat, which can reduce sperm productions and sexual functions. Other environmental causes include industrial chemicals. Are you exposed to a work environment that contains pesticides, herbicides, organic solvents, painting products or lead? How about an environment that involves exposure to daily radiation, as in X-rays. How about a sunny beautiful location that invites you to partake in daily sauna exposure or relaxing in daily hot tubs. Testicles contain a muscle called “cremaster muscle,” which contracts and pulls the testicles close to the body when a man gets too cold and relaxes to let them hang down when a man gets too warm.

The Effects of Impotence Where You Live

Where you live and what you do has appeared in clinical studies for impotence. Also, men who work in an environment that is prone to anxiety and depression, such as health care employees, police men and women, and firefighters, are all lead-ins to psychological causes for impotence. Guess what, the National Institute of Health and other organizations have taken a survey on where men live that affects erectile dysfunction. Believe it or not, the states of Pennsylvania, Arizona, Missouri, and Wisconsin, were more affected by impotence or ED than men who lived in Colorado, Washington state, North Carolina, and Virginia. Granted, older men do experience impotence more often, but modern statistics, show that younger men are reporting more incidences of impotence than ever before.

Sporting Events and Impotence

What is the common denominator for an impotence study to identify specific states? The more highly affected states have the highest rate of men over 60, while the lowest affected states have men who are a lot younger – in their 20s. Men should be aware of the specific health issues and challenges that your residential state faces, such as diabetes and obesity, which are contributing factors to impotence, in the state of Georgia. Do you live in an environment that supports high incidences of prolonged bicycling, spinning, or even horseback riding? These activities affect the pelvic floor muscles and a man's neurological system, where nerves that lead to the penile area, can become desensitized. If there are blood vessel injuries associated with these activities, they can cause temporary impotence.

How God and Ticks Effect Impotence

God is a higher power that is recognized by society and is an important part of our lives. However, what if men live in a religious environment where sexual behaviors are infused through guilt. Sexual guilt, even though it is a less common trigger, it can cause impotence or ED. Sexual guilt can become a deeply rooted problem for young men and leading into older years. Do you enjoy the great outdoors that can put you into contact to the bites of infected black legged ticks? If so, you can contract a Lyme disease which is caused through the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted through a tick. Lyme disease affects the central nervous system, the autonomic nervous system, and a man's whole body. Lyme can also alter a man's ability to maintain a sexual erection, as well as decreasing his libido because it is a painful disease. There are tick borne diseases in all 50 states, with an explosion expected this year (2014) as reported by the CDC.

Conclusion

Impotence has many different causes. When a man is aroused, his brain sends signals to his penile nerves. These nerve cells allow for a rush or an increase in blood flow to the penis, causing it to become hard. Thus, anything that interferes with this nervous system communication, can lead to impotence. There are amazing triggers, other than a beautiful woman, that goes into a man's arousal moments. However, there are also many triggers that can cause a man to lose his ability to remain erect or to be unable to salute the people he enjoys. Environmental studies have been ongoing in the field of impotence for many years. However, there are treatments for many things that can cause impotence, which in a majority of the cases, is only a temporary condition.

4 Basics Tips On How To Last Longer In Bed During Christmas!!

At some point in their lives almost all men wish that they were able to last longer during intercourse. Premature ejaculation can affect men at any age, and is one of the most common sexual complaints among guys. There are several different methods men can use to treat ED, and there are also some basic tips that you can use to last longer in bed.

improve male sexual performance

Tips to Help You Last Longer in Bed

Erectile dysfunction (ED) occurs when a man orgasms before he or his partner is ready. It can be an embarrassing condition that can also cause problems in a relationship. There are some tricks that men can use to help them last longer and perform better in the bedroom.

1. The start and stop method.

Just as the name implies, this method requires you to have enough control during intercourse to stop creating friction before you orgasm. It can be difficult for some men to master at first, but it does get easier to master with practice. If you are worried that it might be difficult for your partner to reach an orgasm with the loss of rhythm, you can continue to stimulate her with your fingers if the sexual position allows it. Developing your self control in the bedroom can also improve other areas of your life.

2. Altering your concentration.

If you do not want to break the sexual rhythm you have established with your partner, trying to concentrate on non sexual things can help to delay your orgasm. While this might be effective at prolonging your climax, it can also make your partner feel inadequate. If you are planning on concentrating on something other than your partner during intercourse, talking with her first about your erectile dysfunction can help prevent any problems from developing.

3. Male enhancement pills and supplements.

There are male enhancement pills and supplements available to treat your erectile dysfunction, and should only be taken under the supervision of a health care professional. Some of the best male enhancement pills contain all natural ingredients to help improve sexual performance, which can include L-arginine and omega 3 fatty acids. These all natural supplements are safe for most men to take, and can also help to improve your general health. The ingredients in the supplements can help to regulate hormonal levels, improve circulation, and even lower blood pressure. All of which could be contributing to your inability to control your orgasm.

4. Desensitizing gels and creams

Gels and creams that work to numb the tiny nerve endings in your penis can help you last longer in bed. These products work best for men that do not have difficulty becoming or staying aroused. There are some side effects associated with desensitizing creams, which can include reduce sensitivity in your penis for an extended period of time. Condoms can also help to desensitize your penis and prevent sexually transmitted diseases. There are several different types of condoms to choose from, and the best one for you will depend on your personal preferences.

Summary

Almost all men experience the embarrassing problem of not being able to control their orgasms at one point in their lives. It is most common in younger men who are having intercourse for the first time, but it does occur in guys of all ages. If the premature ejaculation is caused by excitement or nervousness, this problem usually resolves itself once you have become more comfortable being sexually active. For other men premature ejaculation can be caused by health conditions, emotional issues, or problems in the relationship. Along with communicating any sexual problems with your partner, there are some tips that you can try to help you last longer.

Concentrating on other issues during sex, along with briefly stopping can all help to prolong your orgasm. There are also over the counter desensitizing creams and gels to try, but many men are uncomfortable with the idea of deadening the nerves on their penis. Male enhancement pills are also an option, and can also help to treat other health problems.

The best way to try and prolong your orgasm is to wear a latex condom. Not only should you always practice sex sex, the latex barrier can make it more difficult for you to climax. Condoms are also available in several different sizes and styles, which can also help to prolong your pleasure. By following these simple tips, you and your partner can enjoy a passionate and satisfying sex life.

How Do Semen Increase Pills Work?

Being able to ejaculate copious amounts of semen is often seen as a sign of virility and masculinity. It can help to increase your chances of fathering a child, and some men also believe that ejaculating large amounts of semen can increase sexual desire and make an orgasm last longer. While there is not any scientific evidence to support the theory that you'll experience a more intense orgasm, it can help to improve your confidence and possibly the chances of becoming a father.

How to Increase Semen?

There are several methods men can try to increase their semen production, and one of the most popular ways is male enhancement or male enlargement pills. These natural supplements can help your body to produce more semen, without the risk of dangerous side effects. Semen increase pills use natural ingredients to improve penile function, and to increase your sexual drive. With ingredients that include zinc, ginseng, omega 3 fatty acids, and other antioxidants many men notice an improvement in their libidos and ability to perform sexually. When you are more relaxed and confident during sexual activity, there is often an increase in semen volume. Along with treating certain types of sexual dysfunctions, male enlargement pills can also help to improve your general health. Studies have shown that healthy men normally produce more semen and have higher libidos, than those who make poor lifestyle choices.

How Do the Supplements Work?

Semen increase pills that contain natural ingredients help to stimulate the glands that are responsible for the production of the male fluid. Semen is produced in the seminal vesicle, and discharged through the tip of the penis during an orgasm. When the glands are stimulated more semen is produced, and the male enlargement supplements can also help to improve the health of your sperm.

Supplements that contain zinc can improve the quality of your sperm, which is essential for successful impregnation. Antioxidants can not only increase semen production, but also help to protect your sperm from harmful free radicals.

Are Semen Increase Pills Safe?

All natural male enhancement pills are safe for most men to take without risk of side effects, though a health care professional should be contacted before adding any supplements to your daily routine.

The natural ingredients not only help to stimulate the product of semen, but also work to treat other sexual dysfunctions which could be causing your low sperm production. Antioxidants can also help to improve your general health and increase your libido. While male enlargement pills are generally considered safe, there are other methods men can try in addition to help increase seminal volume.

Other Methods to Increase Semen Production

One of the most common causes of low semen volume and many sexual dysfunctions is lifestyle choices, which can affect all aspects of your general health. Poor diet can cause a decrease in testosterone and a lessening in the production of semen, along with smoking and drinking excessive amounts of alcohol. Poor dietary choices can also cause low levels of semen, along with a decrease in libido and sexual function.

Along with making health lifestyle choices, daily exercises can also help to improve semen levels. Many men have found that Kegel exercises can not only help improve their control over their orgasms, but also semen production. When these are combined with natural semen increase pills must men notice an improvement in their overall health and sexual function.

Summary

It is normal for men to want to increase their volume of semen for a variety of different reasons, and male enhancement products can help. The natural ingredients found in the supplements can not only improve semen levels but also different sexual dysfunctions. The antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals found in the male enhancement supplements can also improve your overall health, which might have also been contributing to your low semen levels. When the supplements are combined with healthy lifestyle choices, most men report noticing a dramatic improvement in their sex lives.

Being able to ejaculate large amounts of semen may make some men feel more masculine, but this does not necessarily mean that their sperm is healthier or that they can perform better in bed. Most men find that by living a health lifestyle, their sex life is more satisfying. If you do feel that your low semen levels are hindering your ability to father a child, then male enlargement pills can help.

Infants at risk for accidental poisoning

Even though they are less likely to be mobile, infants 6 months and younger are involved in unintentional poisonings, according to a new study. The research, published online Jan. 13 and in the February print issue of the journal Pediatrics, found that one-third of the poisonings were related to medication errors.

New data act as a reminder about accidental poisoning

“I was surprised with the large number of exposures even in this young age group,” lead author A. Min Kang, MD, a medical toxicology fellow at Banner-University Medical Center in Phoenix, told HealthDay. “Pediatricians typically do not begin poison prevention education until about 6 months of age, since the traditional hazard we think about is the exploratory ingestion – that is when kids begin to explore their environment and get into things they’re not supposed to,” Kang added.

For the study, Kang and his colleagues reviewed all poison control center contacts in the National Poison Data System files for calls on infants 6 months and younger from 2014 to 2013. Their findings showed that of the more than 270,000 exposures reported during that time, 97 percent were accidental. Most of the calls did not result in hospitalization, but there were 73 deaths.

About half the poison center calls were the result of “general unintentional ingestion,” which included the baby exploring and swallowing a hazardous substance. Another 36.7 percent of the exposures were due to medication errors.

Among the medication exposures, 47 percent involved dosage mistakes. The remaining 43 percent involved giving a medication twice or too soon, or giving an infant the wrong medication. Almost all exposures happened at home, and most involved a single substance, usually a liquid.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) was involved in more than 22,000 medication exposures and nearly 5,000 general exposures. Kang told HealthDay this high rate reflects the frequent use of acetaminophen because it is recommended for infants instead of ibuprofen.

Other common medication exposures included cough and cold products, antibiotics, antihistamines and ibuprofen. Kang noted that the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) strongly recommends against using cold or cough preparations in children younger than 2.

The most common general exploratory ingestions included diaper care and rash products, acetaminophen, and gastrointestinal products such as those prescribed to treat an infant’s acid reflux. Kang emphasized that even though infants are not very mobile, anything they can get hold of generally winds up in their mouth.

“Caregivers should try to be aware of the surroundings in which they place an infant because even if they are not mobile, they can still grab things within reaching distance and the first thing they will do is put it in the mouth,” Kang told Reuters. “Be mindful of older siblings and restrict their access to dangerous substances because they may share things that they find,” Kang also advised.

Kang suggested that it might be time for doctors to provide poison prevention education to caregivers earlier, even starting when newborns leave the hospital.

Zitka virus detected in New York

Health officials in New York have reported 3 cases of Zitka virus acquired while traveling to regions rife with the disease carrying mosquitoes. Although there is now a wide swath of countries and tropical islands seriously affected by Zitka infections, including Mexico, the Caribbean and several South American nations, Brazil has been hardest hit, with more than 1.5 million reported cases according the Pan American Health Organizations.

Zika virus is here in New York

Those at greatest risk are pregnant women, who risk giving birth to still born babies, or those with microcephaly (or small head size) and poorly developed brains. To date Brazil has recorded 3,893 suspected cases of birth defects attributed to Zitka virus. As a result, the country is now recommending that women postpone pregnancies for at least 2-years.

The news could not come at a worse time for the South American nation, which is gearing up to host the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro this summer (technically winter there), August 5-21. In the meantime, the Ministry of Health is continuing to scour the Olympic and Paralympic cites for any breeding grounds for the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that transmit Zitka (as well as chikungunya and dengue diseases). The mosquitoes are also endemic throughout West Africa, the Congo, Southeast Asia and parts of Indonesia.

In the meantime, New York State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker issued a statement saying that despite the diagnoses here, “there is virtually no risk of acquiring Zitka here at this time, as the virus cannot be spread through casual contact with infected people, and this is not mosquito season.” Still, anyone traveling abroad needs to take special precautions to avoid being bitten. At present there is no vaccine against Zitka, and while British scientists are at work trying to develop a means of endowing suicide genes in the mosquitoes that will “kick in before they are able to reproduce,” it will probably take 3-years before the project is successful.

NYC begins fight against the Zika virus

The next pandemic scare is upon us.

Now that the hysteria regarding the deadly Ebola virus has largely dissipated, another viral threat is bringing new cause for concern. In a CNN report today it was revealed that a disturbing spike in the outbreak of the so called Zika Virus is taking place-- which experts advise is expected to adversely affect the majority of the entire American continent.

Are we prepared for the next pandemic

Check this Article: Penile Implant Surgery in India

During the past several months there has been a rage of Zika epidemics breaking out in many of the countries on the south American continent-- with 21 countries and territories being affected. This includes Brazil which was the first country to report an outbreak back in May 2015. Over the past weekend there have been reports of three British travelers that have been affected by the virus-- as a result of trips to to Columbia, Suriname and Guyana, all of which have been troubled by the disease.

The Zika virus which takes its name from the Zika Forest in Uganda where it was first identified in monkeys in 1947-- is a member of the Flaviviridae family of viruses. The first evidence of human contamination by the Zika virus however, was not discovered until 1954, in Nigeria.

The disease which is spread mainly through mosquitoes, ticks and other Vector Arthropods, causes a mild fever in humans similar to other viral diseases of the the flaviviridae family-- such as Denuge Fever, Yellow Fever, and West Nile disease.

Although on the surface this disease may seem mild in comparison to the devastating effects of the Ebola virus, it has also been linked to Microcephaly-- a condition in newborns which causes an abnormal reduction in head size, due to under development of the brain.

According to a report published today by James Gallagher, (chief Health Editor for the BBC website)-- doctors have described it as a "pandemic in progress", with some of the affected countries advising women to postpone getting pregnant.

The main source of infection is the Aedes mosquito; a species which inhabits the majority of the Americas-- except for Canada and Chile, where the climate is too cold for it to survive.

No vaccine or preventive medication.

At the time of writing there is no known preventative treatment for people infected by the Zika virus, and until more is learned about the virus-- the Center For Disease Control (CDC), is advising what they describe as "an abundance of caution". This especially applies to pregnant women who are strongly advised to postpone any travel plans they may have made to any of the affected countries,
In addition, the upcoming 2016 Olympic games have become a major source for concern, regarding those who will be travelling to Rio de Janeiro this summer. The local Rio organizing committee however have said that since the games will be held during their dry season, there will be far fewer mosquitoes around. The committee also emphasizes, they will be in close liaison with the Brazilian Health Ministry, and will adhere to their strict virus preventative guidelines.

Since mosquito bites are the prime source of infection, it is advisable for everyone to take extra precautions in order to reduce the risk of being bitten-- by avoiding humid places wherever possible, and through the liberal use of insect repellents.

How to Prevent Concussions

It is football time and myself like a lot of other mothers out there it means time to see our kids play the game while praying they don't get hit too hard. I love football but I do not know the first thing about how the equipment is too fit or what to look for.

Do helmets protect against concussion

Usually, this part is up to the father or man in the child's life but what if there is none and you are the one who is responsible for this? Well in this article I will give you tips on what to look for to see if your child's equipment fits right, if they have signs of a concussion and what to do to help prevent one.

Every year the emergency room sees 135,00 children between the ages of 5-18 for sports related concussions. Out of this number, 21% of the children will have a traumatic head injury due to the sport they received the concussion in. A concussion is a type of brain injury where the athlete does not lose consciousness. All athletes who have ever had a concussion are at an increased risk to suffer another one. Concussion can change how the cells work in the brain normally and can have a long term impact on cognitive, physical and psychological functions.

There is a wide variety of sports that can cause a concussion here are a few:

*football

*rugby

*cheerleading

*soccer

*baseball

*volleyball

*softball

*martial arts

There are many more on the list and you can google a list of them. For this article, I will concentrate on the sport of football.

These are tips that I learned and some of the signs of concussions while I attended a seminar put on by Ahead of the Game.

Equipment:

1.The helmet should fit snug and should be one inch above the eyebrows. Grab the face mask and move the helmet up and down. If it is too loose it will move all over.

2. The ears should be where the ear holes are so that they can hear commands.

3. When taking off the helmet, your child should put hands in the ear holds and press up.

Some Concussion signs:

If you think your child has a concussion remove the child from the game. DON'T let them tell you they want to keep playing, pull the parent card and take them out. Better they are mad at you and can play later than having a major head injury. Go get your child evaluated by a health care professional that is experienced in concussions. Until the health care professional gives you the green light, keep your child out of play. Better to play it safe than sorry.

Preventing Concussion

Let’s pass the antacid, please!

Over eating is the trade mark of many Americans. Nowadays it is near impossible to go anywhere without seeing food trucks or one of Americas famous food chains. The food is ready to be served, convenient and on the go. Hamburger, pizza, taco, coca cola, fresh French fries, fried chicken, fried sea food, donuts are mostly consumed at all times, morning to evening. If Fast food restaurants are making billions of dollars; then the pharmacology industry is always behind; providing, tablets for heartburn relief.

Gelusil Antacid Tablets for Heartburn Relief

According to the American academy of family physicians, antacids are the third highest selling in this drug category with an estimated $14 billion in annual sale. The only independent and non- profit research organization in the Unites States, Forsyth institute published that approximatively 100 million Americans have taken or are ‘grabbing’ prescription and over-the-counter antacids for heartburn relief.

Esomeprazole known as Nexium is manufactured by AstraZeneca and is very well advertised on television. Nexium belongs to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. Its role is to decrease the amount of acid produced in the stomach. In 2008, the food and drug administration approves Nexium for use in children as young as 1 year of age, regardless of side effects.

In 2015, many studies have linked antacids to over-growth of undesirable bacteria. Proton pump inhibitors can amplify the growth of clostridium difficile, a detrimental species.

The Mayo clinic recently announced that friendly gut microbiome diversity are very important. A decrease of healthy gut bacteria can lead to medical complications. In the opposite an augmentation of unhealthy bacteria can bring about illnesses such as infections.

The type of spore forming bacteria, Clostridium difficile leads to infection such as inflammation of the large intestine or colitis. C. difficile releases toxins that may cause bloating and diarrhea, with abdominal pain, which may become severe. Latent symptoms of Clostridium difficile infection often mimic some flu like symptoms. Between 2000 and 2007, C. difficile-related deaths increased by 400%.

Knowing that gut bacterias are fundamental for multiple purposes, I wonder how children that have been administrated Nexium are doing! Some common side effects of the drug in kids are higher risk for development of lower respiratory infections and nosocomial sepsis.

Unbalanced meals and over-eating can have severe side effects and will often lead to long-term utilization of antacid tablets.

Hypomagnesaemia or low magnesium: an electrolyte disturbance.

Common symptoms like convulsions, muscle spasms or cramps as well as muscle weakness and numbness can be caused by antacids. More severe symptoms that may occur are: hypertension, cardiac arrhythmia, tachycardia, depression and others. Adding alcohol or NSAIDs to the above symptoms may cause further damages or even death.

Osteoporosis is another preeminent illness that may have been caused by antacids abuse because studies show that such pills increase the risk of bone fractures. Very often antacid tablets block the absorption of calcium and significantly decrease the synthesis of important nutrients in the gut. Fractures of the wrist, hip, arm, ribs or even vertebrae tend to occur more often beyond 50 years and older.

A change in diet is obviously the priority in order to avoid the use of antacids. Nowadays there are many alternative treatments available to the general public. Visit an integrative practitioner for further examination prior to self-administration of medications.

Tango dancing can help patients with Parkinson's disease

Sufferers of Parkinson's disease are in for a pleasant surprise. It may be helpful for these patients to find some time to go tango dancing. McGill University reported on April 13, 2015, tango dancing may benefit Parkinson's disease patients.

Tango dancing benefits Parkinson's patients

According to findings from a new study by researchers at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital there could be possible benefits for people at various stages in the development of Parkinson’s disease from dancing the Argentine tango. The researchers looked at motor abilities of patients following a 12-week tango course.

They also assessed the effect that tango has on symptoms of this disease.

The researchers investigated whether a social and physical activity which is associated with music, such as tango, could possibly have therapeutic value for patients with Parkinson's disease. These patients generally suffer from motor dysfunctions including tremor, rigidity, and gait dysfunction as well as non-motor symptoms, such as depression, fatigue and cognitive degeneration.

This study has been published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine. The goal of the researchers was to determine effects of Argentine tango on the motor and non-motor manifestations seen in patients with Parkinson's disease. It was concluded Argentine tango can improve balance and functional mobility in these patients. There may be modest benefits on cognition and fatigue in Parkinson's disease patients.

This is very compelling research. Dr. Silvia Rios Romenets, who was the lead researcher in the study and who has a special interest in Parkinson’s disease and dance therapy, says there has been growing evidence that habitual physical activity is associated with a lower risk of developing Parkinson's disease therefore suggesting a potential slowing of Parkinson's disease progression.

It is really exciting to note that there is a connection between music and the dopamine systems located in the brain, which are vital for establishing and maintaining behavior. Therefore, mixing music with exercise in dance such as the tango can enhance accessibility, enjoyability, and motivation, as well as generate better mood and stimulate cognition. Furthermore, the social interaction and social support which are involved in tango have positive effects on mood and compliance.

This could also be some good news for victims of psychiatric drugging. The psychiatrists consistently prescribe neuroleptic drugs for what they claim are psychotic states and for schizophrenia. There are actually no biological markers for any of the psychiatric diagnoses, as reported upon by the Citizens Commission on Human Rights, andthe neuroleptics generally cause a Parkinson’s disease like syndrome which is very painful and debilitating. While struggling to survive the abusive interventions of psychiatrists the victims of psychiatric drugging should theoretically benefit from Argentine tango.

Why you need to eat before a morning run

If you are a morning runner, it seems like all you need to do is jump in your clothes (unless you sleep in them), stretch and head out the door to hit the road for your daily sweat session.

You might want to eat breakfast before a morning run

Think again.

Before you lace up your shoes, make sure you are fueling properly for the run that you have in front of you. While you were sleeping, you may have not been doing any activity -- but your body was busy. As a result, it depleted much of the energy in your system. In fact, researchers have found that your liver glycogen can drop as much as 50 percent while you sleep.

Liver glycogen serves as the main source of fuel for your body when you are running and when it's depleted, it can lead to you feeling exhausted -- impacting the quality of your run. This is why most marathon runners will tell you that the marathon isn't half over until you reach mile 20, which is when the body's muscles tend to run out of their glycogen stores.

The best way to fight this depletion comes from a quick bit of fuel in the morning before you head out for your run. For easy morning runs, all you need is about 100 calories of fuel, best served in some Gatorade or energy chews, like the PROBAR Bolt. Longer runs will require a bit more investment in your fueling strategy, and might require some carbs from a bagel or other food option.

However, finding the best fuel for your body and your running needs will take some time. As frustrating as it may be, this will often take place in a form of "trial and error," where you will have to see how your body reacts, while running, to the various fuel that you put into your body.

Either way, take a few extra seconds to grab some proper fuel before your next morning run. Your body will thank you.

Lowering blood pressure for older adults could be lifesaving

Researchers by scientists at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute have concluded that the best lifesaving information for people 50-years old and up is to keep their blood pressure down below levels recommended just a few years ago. While earlier studies issued guidelines suggesting a systolic reading (the high number which measures pressure exerted by the blood while the heart is pumping) of 140 for healthy adults, and 130 for those with diabetes, the new findings state that both should maintain systolic pressure of 120 in order to help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. High blood pressure (aka hypertension) is the leading factor for heart attack stroke and kidney disease. The lower number, or diastolic reading measures the blood pressure when the heart is at rest between beats.

Lowering blood pressure for older adults could be lifesaving

In fact, it has been shown that high blood pressure over time (not just a single episode) will result in thickening of the arteries,” according to Dr. Richard Schlofmitz, chairman of cardiology at St. Francis Hospital in Flower Hill, NY. He also added that although arteries naturally thicken as people age, hypertension can “exacerbate the problem.”

Although the NHLB Institute study was slated to continue for another year, Dr. Lawrence Fine, chief of clinical applications and prevention said that they decided to close the clinical research project a year ahead of schedule after concluding they had enough information and evidence that proved “treating blood pressure to lower standards in older and high risk patients can be beneficial.”

Note: In addition to arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) hypertension is often precipitated by high cholesterol as well as smoking cigarettes, stress, obesity, high sodium intake, and susbtance abuse (both alcohol and drugs), as well as certain medications (including contraceptives) and high water retention.
