Videoconferencing reported to reduce stress among hospitalized children

Frequently, hospitalized patients appreciate visits from friends and relatives; in addition, children may be particularly distressed by the hospital environment and disconnection between loved ones. However, not uncommonly, a visitor will arrive when the patient is off having a procedure, the patient may have limited access for reasons such as isolation policies, or a person simply may not have the time available to make the visit. Patient-visitor contact can be greatly improved with videoconferencing. A new study evaluated how well the technology reduced stress among hospitalized children. The findings were published online on June 30 in the journal Pediatrics.

Virtual visits reduce stress in hospitalized kids

The study authors explained that Family-Link is a videoconferencing program, which allows hospitalized children and their parents to virtually visit family members and friends using laptops, webcams, and a secure Wi-Fi connection. They assessed the association of Family-Link use on the reduction of stress experienced by children during hospitalization.

The researchers offered Family-Link to pediatric patients who had an expected length of hospitalization of four or more days. They measured the stress levels of hospitalized children at admission and discharge using a previously published Parental Stress Survey. They conducted a statistical analysis to assess the relationship between the use of Family-Link and stress experienced by children during hospitalization.

The study group comprised 367 children: 232 Family-Link users and 135 non–Family-Link users. Using a score matching method, they found that the use of Family-Link was significantly associated with a greater reduction in overall average stress compared with non–Family-Link users among the group of patients who lived closer to the hospital and had shorter lengths of hospitalization. In this group, the overall reduction in stress was 37% greater among Family-Link users than non–Family-Link users.

The authors concluded that the use of videoconferencing by some hospitalized children and families to conduct virtual visits with family and friends outside of the hospital was associated with a larger reduction in stress during hospitalization than those who did not use videoconferencing.

A Brief Overview On Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction is also known as ED and it is a medical condition that affects men. This condition is defined by a man's inability to achieve or maintain an erection suitable enough for sexual intercourse. Many factors typically lead to ED and they could include chronic illness, exhaustion, poor blood flow to the penis and/or drinking too much alcohol.

Men that experience erectile dysfunction over a long period of time could be diagnosed as being impotent. This type of condition could not only affect a man's physical and sexual health it could also increase his stress levels, create relationship problems or lower his self-esteem. In some instances ED could cause a male to develop mental health issues.

Sometimes ED is caused by other more serious medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes that is not being properly controlled. Men who experience issues with impotence should have their bodies diagnosed and treated for these diseases if they are present. Once treatment has been administered it could reverse the condition of ED.

Un-Natural Treatment For Erectile Dysfunction

There are a variety of different treatments that doctors or physicians prescribe for ED. They include sildenafil (Viagra), Tadalafil (Cialis) and Vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn). Other treatment options for this problem are Alprostadil and testosterone replacement

Viagra is the commercial name of a drug called sildenafil. This particular substance works only when a man is sexually aroused and it cannot be used to stimulate a man's sexual desire.Read more about Viagra.

Tadafil also known as Cialis works by releasing chemicals into a person's body that are necessary for achieving an erection. Once this happen a man should be able to stay erect long enough for sexual intercourse.

Vardenafil is also commonly referred to as Levitra and Staxyn and it is a common drug that is also used for helping men to achieve an erection. Verdenafil works by controlling an enzyme that is commonly present inside a male's penis when he is aroused. All three of three of these drugs work by relaxing the muscles in a man's penis. Once the muscles are relaxed greater blood flow is possible which ultimately leads to an erection.

Alprostadil works in one of two different ways for men with ED. Alprostadil can be self-injected into the penis which will help it to stay erect for about an hour. There is also a suppository form Alprostadil that can be planted inside of the tip or opening of a male's penis. Once the suppository has been inserted into a man's penis he should be able to have an erection for up to an hour.

Natural Treatment For Erectile Dysfunction

Natural remedies can also be used to treat problems with ED. Natural male enhancements such as Virectin, Androzene, Vigrx plus and PHGH are different types of natural male enhancement products that is able to help males with their problems with maintaining an erections.

Virectin is a natural male enhancement product that contains the ingredients niacin, Selenium and Tribulus. Each of these ingredients increases sex hormones, sperm levels and libido. Apparently, Virectin product just uses all natural products and does not have any known negative side effects or none that have been reported.

Androzene has a lot of solid ingredients such as zinc, calcium and Yaurine that are designed to help men to increase their sexual performance. Androzene natural male enhancer does not contain any known side effects but the ingredient Yohimbe which is included in the product is known to affect men with conditions such as high blood pressure, liver problems and chest pain.

Vigrx Plus has the same natural ingredients as most other male enhancement treatments. People who have used this product claim that it is effective for achieving a long lasting erection. However, some people reported that Vigrx Plus caused them restlessness, gastrointestinal problems, insomnia, allergic reaction and restlessness. People are strongly encouraged to contact a doctor before taking this pill.

PHGH is a male enhancement formula that contains Tongkat Ali, L-Arganine and L-Carnitine. All three of these ingredients increase testosterone and decrease stress. PHGH works pretty well according to many reports but it does have some side effects. These side effects include stomach issues and headaches. Gas and intestinal problems can also result from the use of this drug.

Ultimately, each person with ED should consult their doctors to figure out which treatment is best suited for their situation. People with erectile dysfunction should keep in mind that many natural male enhancements have not been tested or researched by qualified or approved medical professionals. People who suffer from ED should only take treatments that have been prescribed by their doctors or physicians.

Strength training during pregnancy

An effective strength training program can provide a multitude of benefits for a woman during her pregnancy. However, an expecting mother undergoes substantial physiological changes throughout the terms, and these changes should be taken into account to ensure the utmost safety conditions. The following sections will detail the benefits of strength training during pregnancy, safety measures, and guide you specific resistance training protocol based on the current research to ensure a safe, effective pregnant workout experience.

Training During Pregnancy

7 Benefits of Prenatal Exercise

Improved Weight Management It is estimated that 60% of expecting mothers remain sedentary throughout their pregnancy. Numerous research results have shown that following a regular program of prenatal exercise can significantly decrease excess weight gain. One study showed that pregnant women who maintained physical activity levels gained 20% less weight while pregnant than those who remained inactive. Other studies have shown that women who gained more than the recommended amount of weight during pregnancy were significantly heavier at long-term follow-up than women who gained the recommended amount or less.

Reduction in Gestational Diabetes Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the most common medical complication associated with childbirth, affecting up to 10% of all pregnancies. Women with GDM are prone to developing diabetes postpartum. Physically active women who exercise throughout pregnancy reduced their odd of acquiring GDM by 59% compared to those women who are not active.

Lower Rates of Preeclampsia

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-related disorder that encompasses maternal hypertension, proteinuria, and edema. It can bring about seizure and/or cerebral hemorrhage and is the second leading cause of maternal death in the United States. Although data on the subject are somewhat limited, research suggests that regimented prenatal exercise may reduce the incidence of preeclampsia by 24% and also oppose the progression of the disease.

Better Psychological Health

Hormonal shifts, body changes, and impaired physical function play a role in reducing a woman’s feelings of psychological health. As a result, pregnant women tend to have alterations in mood, often leading to depressive episodes as much as11.7% before pregnancy to 25.2% during the third trimester. Studies have found that women who performed a moderate amount of exercise had lower scores on a test measuring depressive symptoms during pregnancy and into the postpartum period compared with those who were not active.

Less Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain (LBP) is one of the most common pregnancy-related disorders, with 76% of women reporting Lumbosacral pain at some point during the term. Studies have shown that pregnant women who participated in an exercise program specifically designed to strengthen the core reported a significant reduction in the intensity of LBP and related discomfort throughout the term.

Enhanced Fetal Development

Recent studies haves shown not only is exercising during pregnancy safe it can actually have a positive impact on the fetus. Positive effects of exercise on the fetus appear to extend into the postnatal period. Children of the women who perform vigorous exercise throughout the term have been found to exhibit signs of heightened attentiveness and discipline, and by the age of 5, these children are neurologically developed more those compared with the control subjects.

Easier Labor

Women who are physically active during pregnancy have been shown to have a decreased risk of premature labor, a reduced incidence of cesarean delivery and shorter hospitalization. In addition, there was a reduced incidence of acute fetal stress in the exercise group as compared with controls. Overall, research has found that adoption of a regimented program of maternal exercise has no negative effects on delivery and generally results in an easier pregnancy with fewer complications.

Strength Training Guidelines

Before engaging in a resistance training program, pregnant women should always get medical clearance from their physician. Although no definitive research has been performed to assess optimal maternal training frequency, it’s recommended that 3 days a week strength training routine can be applied without concern. Beginners should perform 1 set per exercise, whereas intermediate and advanced trainees can realize further benefits from 2 to 3 sets. Rest between sets should last approximately 2 minutes, allowing enough time for recovery of maternal heart rate. Additionally, make sure to avoid holding one’s breath during exercise. It increases both heart rate and blood pressure which can decrease splanchnic blood flow and uterine perfusion which is potentially dangerous to the child. Additionally, it is essential to keep well hydrated throughout exercise to increase heat dissipation. Consuming 8oz of water before training and then an additional 8oz for every 15 minutes of exercise is a good rule of thumb to maintain fluid balance. It is also important to note that the secretion of relaxin increases significantly during the first trimester, causing joints to become less stable. Therefore it is particularly important for the pregnant woman to use proper form during exercise. Ballistic movements, Olympic movement and plyometrics should be avoided as they can heighten the possibility of strains and tears of muscles.

Simple nutrition principles for making changes in your body

So you want to get fit but you don't know quite where to start. Well, one of the best and first places to start is in the kitchen. Although changing your nutrition is not always easy, it is doable and it does work if you approach in the right manner.

Anti-inflammatory diet

Start out by eating 6 small meals a day. How? Space your meals to be eaten in small portions every two to three hours. Always add a protein and a carbohydrate to at least two of your meals, as well as one vegetable.

Understand that a portion size is equivalent to the size of the palm of your hand.

Drink at least eight to ten glasses of water per day.

Plan your meals in advance and keep track of what you eat.

Write out a grocery list before you go to the grocery store.

Here is the best principle of all and also the most fun; once a week, allow yourself a free day to eat WHATEVER you want. Why the free day? Because part of the reason people don't stay on track is because they feel they "can't" enjoy what they love any longer. Sometimes the thought of giving up something you enjoyed and looked forward to, causes you to begin to lose your drive to make the proper changes. This is when most revert back to their old ways. The free day becomes a sort of treat as a job well done for staying on task, and it is an incentive to anticipate a reward for your efforts. People are more likely to stick with healthy eating if they are still allowed to indulge once in awhile.

The best time to plan your grocery shopping is at the end of your free day. In this way, you have already allowed yourself the splurge and can better plan your healthy regimen. It's much easier to shop smart when you are not craving what you should not be eating.

If you start your journey of change by applying these small simple principles, you will begin to see changes, not only in the way you look and feel but also in the way you view food.

Shred Diet melts 20 pounds in four weeks Study supports fast weight loss

Ready to fight flabby fat? By becoming a member of what Dr. Ian Smith has dubbed Shredder Nation, you can lose up to 20 pounds in four weeks. Dr. Ian explained how the diet works on Rachael Ray's Thursday talk show.
30 day shred diet plan

Dr. Smith is author of "Shred: The Revolutionary Diet: 6 Weeks 4 Inches 2 Sizes," and emphasizes that the plan is designed to boost your metabolism with carefully calibrated cycles. The different phases are designed to provide variety while taking off pounds quickly.

The phases include Foundation, with four meals and three snacks; Accelerate, to supercharge weight loss; Shape, to provide "calorie confusion" and Tenacious, the final phase for reaching goal. For those who want to take off the weight faster, Dr. Ian recommends his supercharged "Super Shred: The Big Results Diet: 4 Weeks 20 Pounds Lose It Faster."

However, some have questioned whether a diet designed to provide rapid weight loss is safe and sensible? Prevailing wisdom is that slow, steady weight loss is safest and, once dieters have achieved their goal weight, most effective.

That "wisdom," however, is a myth, according to a new study in the journal Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition. Losing weight quickly actually works better, reported "Good Morning America" on Thursday.

Krista Casazza, assistant professor at the University of Alabama and author of the report, discovered that weight loss success in the "real world" contradicts what most diet experts advise. Losing weight faster makes it more likely that dieters will keep off the weight.

And if you've ever delayed a diet because you weren't "ready" to start, just do it, says Casazza. The famous "I'll start the diet on Monday" mantra doesn't equate to success.

As for the "Super Shred" diet's emphasis on how many pounds you lose? That theory that you shouldn't weigh yourself all the time also is a myth, according to the professor's research. Casazza’s study revealed that dieters who step on the scale daily actually increase their odds of weight loss.

In addition, Dr. Ian puts the focus on losing large amounts of weight, which contradicts what many weight loss gurus urge. But he's right, according to this new report.

And the University of Alabama professor urges dieters to think big. "Striving for something unreasonable like losing hundreds of pounds often drives you to engage in ambitious, out-of-the-box thinking," she declared.

Report 90 percent of children eating too much salt

The great majority of American children -- or 90 percent -- eat far more sodium than is recommended, which puts them at risk for high blood pressure and heart disease later in life, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About one in 6 children ages eight to 17 already have high blood pressure.
Child Is Eating Too Much Salt

Check this Article: Penile Implant Surgery in India

In the latest data available on sodium consumption in U.S. children (from 2009-2010), the report shows how much sodium school-age children eat and where it comes from. It also explains the 10 food categories that add the most salt to children’s diets.

A major finding was that children ages six to 18 eat an average of about 3,300 mg of sodium daily in foods before they are salted at the table; the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that children eat a total of less than 2,300 mg of sodium per day. (2,300 mg of sodium equals one teaspoon.) Children with hypertension or diseases such as diabetes should eat even less sodium, or 1, 500 a day.

Most of the salt consumed by the children in the report was found to be in these forms:

Approximately 65 percent of sodium comes from processed foods bought in a store.

Thirteen percent comes from fast food and pizza restaurant foods.

Nine percent comes from foods in the school cafeteria.

Additionally, 43 percent of sodium comes from these 10 food categories:

Pizza

Bread

Rolls

Cold cuts/cured meats

Cheese

Chicken patties/nuggets/tenders

Savory snacks

Sandwiches

Pasta mixed dishes

Mexican mixed dishes

And soups.

The CDC urges parents, caregivers, schools, communities, and places that sell or serve food provide more low-sodium options to children. For example:

Parents can provide more fruits and vegetables, and they can compare nutrition facts labels to choose the lowest sodium options before buying. Avoid processed foods and restaurant foods whenever possible

Places that produce, sell, or serve food can replace sodium with alternatives such as spices, herbs, and vegetables. They can also use lower-sodium brands.

Schools and school districts can buy lower-sodium foods, in the lunchroom and in vending machines and school stores.

JAMA study shows no difference in effectiveness of branded diet

All trademarked or branded diet programs produce equal weight loss if a person stays with the diet. Going it on your own can be just as effective as a branded diet. These are the conclusions of a meta-analysis conducted by Bradley Johnston, assistant professor of clinical epidemiology of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University. The study was published in the Sept. 2, 2014, edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
JAMA – The Latest Medical Research

Johnston’s examination included 59 published articles and 48 randomized clinical trails. The research included 7,286 individuals who were considered to be overweight or obese. The research compared weight loss at six months and one year intervals.

Low-carbohydrate diets had an average weight loss of 19.2 pounds and low-fat diets had an average weight loss of 17.6 pounds at six months. Both types of diets showed a slight decrease in weight at one year. The average loss at one year was an additional 2.2 pounds and 4.4 pounds for low-carbohydrate diets and low-fat diets respectively. There was a 3.8 pound greater weight loss with the Adkins Diet than the Zone Diet at six months.

An average weight loss of 16 pounds in a year occurred regardless of the brand of diet followed. The researchers explain that this is encouraging news for people that are overweight because the findings will allow them to opt for the diet that they are most comfortable with. The study also debunks all the claims of any diets superiority over any other diet.

The study is unlikely to cause branded diet companies to cut back on advertising or having celebrity spokespeople claim that their diet is superior. The study does indicate that a self imposed diet will work just as well as a branded diet although that option was not investigated. Even with a weight loss of 16 pounds in a year a very obese person will spend years dieting with any diet in hopes of avoiding diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and the other health problems that are the result of being overweight.
